WEEK 5 BLOG

This week i've found a great article on the views between marijuana and tobacco. I've found that many studies have been done on the use of marijuana at a young age and most lead to abuse. I've come to my own conclusion that the general public doesn't know about the severity of marijuana. In school we are taught about the major effects on alcohol, we even have school demonstrations on drinking and driving but no one teaches you that you can become drug dependent if used at a young age and its one is easily available to youth. I think I have definitely learned my way around researching sites and getting information.

Week 3

Research Strategies has helped me find new search tools. I did try Yippy and that didn't help me much on my research topic. Using Leatherby Libraries has helped me find new material from the normal Google search. With it I was able to find a text on Washington law and the changes dealing with marijuana. But I was frustrated on finding something more current on another state that has already legalized the drug and how its changed since. I would still like to find a good source for that. Using CRAAP has helped me, in the past i think i struggled with credibility. I never looked up the author to see what his credentials were.

Legalizing marijuana in California is becoming harder to choose a side. Yes, I've tried it seen others do it but it's just not my thing. I know a lot of youth who are able to get their hands on it as easy as alcohol. There are already 3 states that have legalized it. So I wanted to learn more about it. So far it's still a toss up. I think its ridiculous that one of the main reasons it was banned was because it was a way to arrest Mexicans that smoked and some African Americans. This drug is used for medicinal purposes, has had maybe one or two causes of deaths while alcohol is available to purchase and has been the cause of many deaths. But on the other hand the use of this drug has been seen to cause substance abuse at a young age. I think history has over exaggerated the use of the drug and people need to know the truth that it can be dangerous just like alcohol but can also have a benefit.  This plant was once required by farmers to grow, heck even George Washington grew it on his property. But they have seen that the amount of THC in marijuana has increased over time.

For me currency played a big factor when searching for sources. A lot of the times there is no date for the article written. Another helpful tool was ads, I noted some sites were full of ads. Some things I still want to look up are the amount people who are imprisoned because of weed.  And how, if any, these 3 other states have improved with the legalization.

Ever since I was little, my parents always told me how important it was to go school and choose a career as soon as possible. When you get into high school that’s about all they ask you as a senior what is your major. At first I said I wanted to go into the military, then chose Psychology and then I came to the conclusion that I wasn’t sure what I wanted to do. So I went to a community college and took general education. As I came to end of my two years at Valley College, I still wasn’t 100%. Thankfully I had a job originally at Customer Service for Ashley Furniture. My part time job became full time and school eventually disappeared.  I am now an assistant, on top of the normal clerical work I deal with advertising throughout all of California. I like what I do, it’s fun, it allows me to travel and is never a boring day. I am soon going to be 25 and finally decided what I want to do. Now I want a real job in the marketing field and all of them require a degree. So this is my first year at Brandman, actually my first year at a University. I’m excited, nervous and eager to start.

This class is very interesting, because the internet has changed dramatically. I remember having to do a research paper for classes at Valley and actually feeling deterred from using the internet as a reference. I want to say I would only use the required amount and the rest would be books.  Even at my position now I research demographics, and newspapers, look for events, contact radio stations. And some of these websites aren’t even current. I do find it harder to find the truth in websites. Like the book says "not all information is equal." This class will actually help me with my current job and also personally. One of my goals is to run the marathon, as I started to look up health and stretching techniques I thought i found a good form of running. I went into a running center where they record your steps and told me it was not the proper way and showed me that it could actually hurt me. i look forward to becoming a better researcher in this new age.
